Despite the exceptions, learning typical rules and sequences will still help our young learners when faced with an unknown word while they read. Anyone who has ever taught sight words knows that sometimes there are no rules. Now, we’re not saying that English is entirely made up of strict rules. Teach a kid a single word, and they’ll know…well, one word, but teach them the pieces of the word, and they’ll begin to decipher hundreds of others. Root Words: Where Math and English Collide Talking, questioning, and developing understanding is the basis of this new educational model. In math, we no longer want students to have the right answer instead, we strive for students to test out different methods for finding the right answer. In a contrast to typical ‘sit and get’ learning, contemporary education is leaning more and more toward problem-solving and helping students seek creative solutions to understand the world around them. Teaching students root words gives new English readers the ability to work through words to seek meaning rather than leaning on the dictionary (or Siri) to provide them with a quick definition.
